Cool Hand Luke – If you like movies that paint fools in a positive light, then this movie is for you. “Fool” Hand Luke, as he should be called, enters a camp-style prison for vandalizing government property (cutting the tops off of parking meters — wow, now how “cool” is that??). After entering prison, there is the usual prison storyline — prisoners jockeying for significance and respect amongst themselves. A fight between the new guy (“Fool”) and the incumbent top dog results in a truce and an ensuing friendship. During one chain gang work scene, a scantily clad woman washes a car while the prisoners gape and gawk while the movie’s director is very careful to zoom and angle in on the “action” complete with soap suds — wow, very creative film making, truly genius and no doubt how this movie won an Oscar for best writing (seriously). In its entirety, the movie paints foolery and insubordination as virtues while depicting submission to authority and to God as laughable (see Romans 1:32). Unfortunately, “Fool” doesn’t get the last laugh as in the end he’s shot in the neck after repeatedly trying to escape (my favorite part). The catchy tag line from this movie is, “What we have here is a failure to communicate.” As far as the movie itself … “What we have here is a failure.”
